Review of Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) by Mirko B — 11 Jul 2008
I loved this film. It's a very light and relaxed story which leaves no doubts about its happy end. Diane Lane was wonderful in the leading role-though not very convincing as a writer(gosh, having a laptop doesn't necessarily make you a writer!)- but the film is actually more about supporting characters and their antics.
The Italian locations are breathtaking and after the film was over I felt like doing exactly the same thing as Frances- just pack my suitcase and head for wherever in Italy, to inhale its gorgeous scents, colors and to indulge in the dolce vita, pretty much like what Catherine does in the film.
She indulges herself and it makes her happy, leading the viewer to believe that Tuscany is all about hedonism. The Polish workers are very sympathetic, which I find to be important, in a country which has a very harsh immigration policy.
The moral of the story would be that Italy is more a state of mind then an actual country. I couldn't agree more. And if this film-at times-seems as a rather long Dolce&Gabbana/Armani ad video, you're spot-on right.
That seems to have had been the intention. Gosh, I'm so in love with Italian fashion...
