Review of Under the Skin (2014) by Gd01Skorpius — 19 Apr 2015
First: This is not an action movie with lots of special effects and Oscar-winning performances. This movie is super downbeat, cerebral, quiet, and sometimes unsettling. If you get bored easily this movie is not for you.
Second: I never read the book, and if I did I wouldn't rate this movie based on it. With that out of the way I found myself transfixed when watching this movie. To be honest, I think I would have been bored silly watching ScarJo drive around for as much as she did, but the eerie, grindy violin soundtrack was hypnotizing, and the camera work, scene composition, and lighting were quite beautiful.
It was a pleasure to watch. These moment of course are punctuated with some very trippy and unsettling scenes where the true nature of the mysterious woman who drives around picking up men is revealed, and the effect it has on her.
It's a strange movie, but worth the watch.
