Review of Under Siege (1992) by Cal ( — 23 Dec 2007
Seagal plays Casey Ryback, a former Navy SEAL captain who is now a cook aboard a U.S. battleship. The ship is loaded with lots of destructive hardware like missiles and bombs, etc, making it the perfect target for a terrorist hijacking.
One night when the crew aboard are celebrating the captain's birthday, the festivities are drawn to a close when terrorists (lead by Tommy Lee Jones) take over the ship. But cook Ryback escapes capture and roams the decks with a gun in one hand and a girl in the other.
Now, wait a minute. Who else thinks that this sounds like an identical copy of 'Die Hard' except the setting is on board a boat? Not to say it doesn't work, because 'Under Siege' is wicked fun and filled with impressive action scenes.
Seagal's trademark cardboard performance isn't too bad here, but it isn't too good either. 'Under Siege' is not Oscar material, but it is a unique action thriller with a high body count, buckets of blood and lots of loud explosions.
