Review of Undead (2003) by Andrew W — 16 Feb 2008
Zombies. They can be difficult to deal with, both for the characters onscreen and the writers and directors off it. How do you make an original, or at least inventive, plot with something so well-trodden? The answer is that you throw in an intergalactic virus, a crazy recluse farmer who can pull guns from anywhere, a quadruple-barreled shotgun, a beauty queen, zombie fish, nudist aliens, and a short shorted foulmouthed police officer- and then set it all in Australia.
Undead is easily the most bizarre, funny, and ingeniously crafted horror flick to come along since Shaun of the Dead or the Evil Dead Trilogy. Fans of monsters and gore, rejoice! You've got something to love and cherish here.
The Spierig Brothers have obviously done their research into the realm of retro sci-fi and gory monster films. Undead delivers punches where necessary, then punches again and tickles you at the same time.
Anyone not acquainted with the Monty Python school of absurd, nihilistic comedy should probably not start out with this film- it's just no fun if you don't know how to get the joke.
