Review of Uncut Gems (2019) by Bhayes — 11 Jan 2020
How on earth is the audience reception so mixed, this is a fantastic movie. Went in to this movie pretty blind.. but I saw that the Safdie brothers made this one, and I loved Good Time, so I had pretty high expectations going in.
The film grabs your attention immediately, and by the time the opening scene and credits are over you realize you have no idea what to expect. Fantastic modern crime thriller, quirky sci-fi undertones, beautifully shot.
As you would expect, it is very anxiety inducing, and the score handled by Oneohtrix Point Never helps you feel all types of ways at once. Also worth noting that whoever was on wardrobe absolutely killed it, and no I am not only talking about Sandler.
Sandler and Garnett also nailed it in this one, and I really hope Sandler gives another quality performance like this again soon. It's a necessary watch and a modern crime classic.
