My initial thoughts before the film is that it wouldn't be any good because Christian films typically overdo their message and thematic elements - not this film. Though its not perfectly executed (there are still cliches and the message does seem forced at times) the film is genuinely good for several reasons: characters who have depth and an emotional connectiveness to the audience, incredible atmosphere and production value (the set pieces only furthered the emotional connectiveness of the film), and the dark places the story went to (Crawford's suicide attempt, the prison fight, etc.

). Although I am a Christian, the message about God's love was a hit or miss throughout the film. One moment the message about God's love seemed genuine and natural, then another time it felt forced and cliche.

There were so many good things about this film though and the fact it is a Christian film (a genre known for weak scripts, characters, cliches, and forced themes) made up for its blemishes. But I'm proud of it even despite its blemishes, because this film is the first Christian film I feel has a story worth seeing.

Hands down the only Christian film I've ever liked. More Christian films need characters like these.
