Review of Uncle Drew (2018) by Jake C — 13 Sep 2018
Twice the movie tells us "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take"-as if the first time Uncle Drew quotes Gretzky, it didn't quite sink in-an ethos that, in a sense, undergirds the very existence of the film: Sure, the idea to turn a commercial into a full blow flick is outlandish, but why not just do it? (Of course, if I were being my usual cynical self, I would suggest that no doubt Pepsi ran loads of market research before sinking a dollar into this feature length advertisement and so really ran no risk at all, but the movie is filled with enough love of the game and the leads bubbling over with so much enthusiasm as to make the craven commercialism negligible.
) In the end, it may not be a slam dunk, wasting too much time running out the clock and diverting itself with needless narrative obstacles to offset the lack of character development, but it nonetheless is never a total brick.
