Review of Uncle Buck (1989) by Matt W — 02 Apr 2010
You ever seen Uncle Buck? Puh hehehehehee! If you havent you're an idiot? Puhehehehehee! I looked at the first page of critic's reviews and saw that all of the rotten ones say no review available. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say its most likely out of fear that john candy's going to drill through their doorknob in the middle of the knight and scare the ever living sh$%&$%@$^#$%&^$ out of them. Luckily I loved the movie, so im safe.
Essentially, uncle buck follows a lackadaisical, lazy brother nicknamed "Buck" who looks after his brothers friends while his brothers wife is tending to her ill father. The story revolves around their experiences together, my favorite being the older sister who hates buck at first but ultimately becomes endeared with him after he teaches her some hard lessons about life.
John Candy is absolutely genius in this film, giving a performance that makes viewers wish their uncles were deadbeat slobs just like him. Macauley caulkin gives a good performance, but the standout of the children is ultimately Jean Louisa Kelly, who plays the closed off and cynical older sister Tia. While caring for the children buck becomes willingly involved in tia's social life after seeing her with a young boy her age after school. The first meeting between Buck and the young boy, Bug, is by far one of my favorite moments in film.
Bug(Tia's man friend)" You ever heard of a mechanic? Hehehehehehhe!".
Buck(stares, mockingly) "You ever heard of a ritual killing? Puhehehehehehee!".
(bug stares, confused).
Buck "Cause you're about to be one. Puhehehhehehee!".
(Bug kisses tia and is left in the dust when Buck zooms off).
It kills me to see so many genius actors like John Candy pass on, especially when they give performances like that of Uncle Buck.
This film will undoubtedly be one of my personal favorites and will be played nonstop on tv until the end of movies.
A pure classic.
