Review of Uncle Buck (1989) by Ms Amanda J — 21 Jan 2011
*Spoilers*.
The story is somewhat predictable - we all know that Buck (Candy) was gonna become everyone's hero in the end, even in the eyes of Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly), who initially couldn't stand him. The ending of this movie is quite warm and touching, with Buck getting ready to leave in his car now that the parents have come back home, and Tia being the only one remaining at the door, smiling at him. He really brought out the best in his once rebellious niece. Despite the predictable yet sweet story, this film is funny every time. John Candy is a hoot as the title character, and Amy Madigan who played his unsatisfied girlfriend also does well. At the time this film was made, Jay Underwood played somewhat of an against type, for he's better known for playing the adorable Chip in Not Quite Human, and the quiet Eric in The Boy Who Could Fly. Here, he's fun to watch as Tia's jerky boyfriend who runs around on her. He also has a queer laugh that Buck mocks right in front of his face. Funny stuff.
