It took 55 years to get this movie done, and it took a woman to do it. The movie affects you strongly, if you have empathy. I understood the flashbacks. It reinforced what made Louis cope with his many bad situations.
The bad reviews have to do with a story that not everyone thinks needs to be told, unless more of the bad stuff is left out, which it can't be. It's a story about what the human spirit can endure. Most of us can't take it.
That's the point of the story, and some people don't get it.
