Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Pascal V — 27 Dec 2012
After The Sixth Sense, everybody's hopes were high for M. Night Shyamalan's next film. And I must say, I wasn't disappointed. The story is about a man (Bruce Willis) who is the sole survivor of an accident he couldn't possibly have survived. Yes, you got it, he seems "unbreakable". Question is, is he really?
What evolves is a story with considerable psychological depth, a nice part by Willis and a great part by Samuel L. Jackson. There is again a surprise at the end (which of course I won't spoil), but this one doesn't turn around the whole story, like in Sixth Sense.
The real strong point of Unbreakable is the beautiful camerawork, colors, lighting, and everything else that has to do with style; it's just all gorgeous to look at, Shyamalan has a superb eye for cinematography.
Inspite of the story being rather slow at times, it kept me interested at all times. The emotions in the film seem genuine and meanwhile there are some nice little jokes that lighten the atmosphere from time to time.
A very intelligent, excellent film.
