Review of Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Mike H — 04 May 2008
A series of images that mean nothing: Welcome to surrealism. Someone once asked David Lynch if he based Eraserhead off this film. His reply was that he had never heard of it. (Give Ryan Boudinot some applause for having no idea what he's talking about.
) Like Eraserhead, this is bizzare, shocking, and nearly plotless. While it isn't as wholly immersive, it is an important roadstop along the highway of cinema. Although it is certainly not the first surrealist film, as many have suggested.
For that, go back to the late 1800s and search for a man named Georges Melies.
