Review of Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
You cannot look at "Un Chien Andalou" from an entertainment point of view, or even really a "respect a film" kind of way. A reviewer said that this bored them, but you know what? They don't have any taste.
This is not a movie, this is not a short, or really a video at all. This is a piece of art. Can you say that a woman getting her eye sliced open with a razor without fear or a guy dressed up as a goat riding a bike through the streets is something normal? Can you say two men dragging a piano with their arms or a drag queen waiting in the streets to get hit by a car is something you see everyday? That's the point of "Un Chien Andalou".
Never has a film as short as fifteen minutes ever been this strange, and never again can it even be copied. That is why it's artistic-- it's something that only the filmmakers could do. This has often been called the first surrealist film, and that's a part of it that makes it even more groundbreaking.
The five stars are for the uniqueness of it, so movie watchers out there-- this film is not even close to "Birth of a Nation" or "All About Eve". This is a different kind of masterpiece.
With the help of renowned artist Salvador Dali, Luis Bunuel makes this "movie" a winner.
