Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Michael W — 04 Mar 2008
Umberto D. is one of the essential films of the Italian neorealism period. That said, I was a tad bit disappointed after having loved Bicycle Thieves and enjoying The Children Are Watching Us a lot. This film is very bleak and very emotional.
It captures the time period it's trying to reach so very well. In the end, I just didn't come out as impressed as I was with the two other pieces. I must admit the film did pick up once Umberto slightly feigned illness.
This truly despairing piece of art is a film worth seeing for any film geek interested in the genre.
