Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Kevin M — 23 Apr 2009
Theres nothing like a good de sica film to utterly ruin your year. my god. this has the power to lay waste to the very souls of those who watch it. this is, for better or worse, a demonstration of the power of the medium. the italian neo-realists werent interested in making films that describe the world the way we want to see it, but in telling stories of depravity and an utter loss of hope in the modern world. de sica might be the very best at this. his direction is near flawless with its deliberate pacing, the perspective on the characters. there are even a couple of moments in the film that I would swear people are not acting, but are actually living out whatever emotion was displayed on their face. so if you watch movies to be entertained forget that this movie exists.
And the dog is great.
