A true masterpiece of Italian neorealism that will tear at your heartstrings to make you laugh and cry. A story about those individuals who society gives up on because of their age, poverty, etc. But ultimately, Umberto D.

is a film about the hope that develops from friendship whether it is the friendship of a secrely pregnant housemaid or of a faithful little dog. Beautifully filmed and poignant, Umberto D. is as much a classic as Vittorio de Sica's other masterpiece, The Bicycle Thieves.

And, like that film, Umberto's tale unravels like a simple parable with the force of sledgehammer.

This review of Umberto D. (1952) was written by on 19 Jul 2009.
