Review of U2 3D (2008) by Irfaan J — 27 Feb 2008
Well, its not the real thing, but the closest u can get without. That pretty much sums up U2 3D, a marvel of 3D cinematic tech that does at times put you in the experience, but I was just frustrated that I couldn't be there myself, mostly coz the presentation was so vivid.
Things do get progressively better though, and eventually the spectacle of U2 pretty much eclipses the flashy state of the art presentation (first live action film filmed entirely in 3D) and you just sit back and enjoy the performance, the 3D becoming part of the experience rather than hampering it. Stand outs have to be Bloody Sunday, One and With or Without You, quality songs, probably never performed better. Overall, a marvelous gig made a little sweeter with the 3D presentation (reach out and touch Bono's outstretched hand, literally!), so much so that its annoyingly close to the real thing.
It doesn't quite beat Beowulf in use of this new medium, but as a cinematic experience it trumps the CGI actioneer, well it will for U2 fans anyway. Oh and yes, see it with an actual audience; still enjoyable with a sparse few but I reckon a better experience would be had if the theatre was somewhere close to full, as ours was the complete opposite.
