Review of The Player (1992) by Irfaan J — 26 Aug 2008
A film who's worth truely resonates when you stay with it till the end, "The Player" is a fantastically barbed satire on the Hollywood conditon, of vain film producers interested in anything but clarity of vision and artisitc merit.
If your a fan of movies that favour the good guys, your gonna have a hard time enjoying this particular ride as it takes some unexpected twists and turns here and there and ultimately paints a very unflatering portrait of the movie industry.
The very first shot of the film lasts for over 5 minutes and basically consists of an uninterrputed rotating tracking shot of a producer's lot where various facets of the industry are mingling around, interacting and going about their business. It sets the scene perfectly and contains some wonderful dialogue who's quality carries on throughout the movie.
This is a film that plays best to those with a love of cinema and a knowledge of some of its history as there are many sly remarks and references that permeate the script. However its also genuinely entertaining, a suspense thriller aswell as a darkly witted comedy with fine performances and solid direction from Robert Altman. Certainly worth your time.
