Review of U Turn (1997) by Matthew K — 16 Mar 2009
This movie doesn't look much like film-noir (far too sunny), but the story most definitely sits within the noir genre. Way too weird and 'out there' for a higher star rating (J-Lo's character is especially bizarre - the incest felt like a step too far).
That said, it's worth a look for the high production values and all-star cast, led by the brilliant Penn. He manages to make the Bobby Cooper character sympathetic, which is no mean feat as he's sleazy and pathetic.
I wasn't overly impressed with Lopez - her baby voice and her pigeon English grated after a while. Joaquin Phoenix was also mis-cast (and it's not often you'll find me dissing the lovely Joaquin).
I loved the ending though!
