The dialogue and characters are flat, the acting terrible, the plot practically nonexistent, and the end result extremely dull. It's easy to see why this has so much indie appeal, as it clearly influenced a certain breed of modern director.
But some of its contemporaries ("Badlands" comes to mind), pull of the same tone much more effectively.
