Review of Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) by James-Masaki R — 28 Jul 2011
"Make it 3 yards motherfucker, and we'll have an automobile race." Possibly the slowest road movie / car movie ever made, and all the better for that. If you're expecting speed, crashes, and Fast & The Furious, you will be extremely disappointed.
But like "Vanishing Point" (one of the best of the best), it is a character study about the 4 main characters and how they fit in, or don't fit in to American society. James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, in their only acting appearances, and Warren Oates as the iconic misguided GTO? A casting dream.
The movie can be analyzed in so many ways, and it should also be taken in consideration that this is Monte Hellman's homage to the French New Wave films and the BBS films of the era, with commercially disasterous results.
