Review of Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) by Matt G — 01 May 2011
Guess what? If you don't like Two-Lane Blacktop, you only care for "typical Hollywood fare" and you're superficial. Thanks, Criterion Collection! This is one of those road movies where characters find themselves and this movie is Chinese water torture if you're not into them.
It appears that they forgot to have THINGS HAPPEN in the movie. I'd like to talk about a plot, but how can you when there isn't any? What does happen is the same scene nine time but in different locations.
Oh look, they're checking under the hood... again. Hey, he's picking up a hitchhiker... again! Oh joy, they're staring into space and there's awkwardly long pauses within conversation! I don't think I can stomach another film like Two-Lane Blacktop.
I don't care if people argue it's full of symbolism and it gets better on multiple viewings. Time is too precious to waste.
