Review of Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) by Stephen C — 09 Oct 2011
The first time I watched Two Lane Blacktop ,i thought "shit where are the car chases ,this is boring" And now looking at the film again I realise its a masterpiece of a road movie that doesnt have to have slam bang action to make it iteresting.
Similar in tone to the overated Easy Rider Monte Hellmans film I feel is the better of the two dealing as it does with the endless highways of America and its beautiful changing landscapes.
It helps that the backstories of the leads is deliberately vague, most notably Warren Oates GTO who has a different life story every time we see him and it changes just as much as his outfit.
Dennis Wilson and James Taylor prove that sometimes rock stars can act when they are given little dialogue and allow the visuals to tell the story.
Hellman shoots the whole thing as if this lifestyle is coming to an end and the ending where the film just bruns out in front of our eyes is one of the most memorable comitted to celluloid.
A film that raises more questions than it answers but on the whole thats no bad thing .
