Review of Two for the Road (1967) by Giffy G — 16 Jan 2009
I was surprised how much I liked this movie. I knew Audrey Hepburn could act, but as she was typecast as the happy-go-lucky (no, I did not say Holly Golightly) woman, even the put-upon happy-go-lucky woman, I was surprised to see her play bitter and to play it well.
(Everyone's acting was superb, but Hepburn blew me away.) The narrative was confusing and convoluted, and I for one did not like using Hepburn's hair as an indicator of time. Once I got a hold of that, it was easy to navigate, but it was hard getting there.
I like that the story had no definitivie beginning, middle, or end. It's hard to pull that off without losing the audience. The script was frighteningly believable (I think my parents have had similar fights), and the editing was remarkable--it had to be to keep the narrative together.
Highly enjoyable once you get into it. There is a learning curve, but it's worth it.
