Review of Two for the Road (1967) by Anna B — 30 Aug 2010
A sophisticated, charming, sometimes painful but ultimately affirming romance. Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney are both fantastic as an unhappy married couple who examine their relationship through flashbacks to their many European vacations, from their very first meeting through every stage of their marriage.
With its wry, bittersweet tone, its quirky editing and its complicated, non-chronological narrative structure, I can see its influence on all sorts of later romantic comedies like Annie Hall, High Fidelity, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and (500) Days of Summer - and it is easily as excellent as any of them.
