Review of Two Days, One Night (2014) by Auramadeus M — 27 Dec 2015
Profoundly subtle and intriguing.
Every part of this film works together perfectly to draw you in to its characters and story, and creates a message to ponder later about being our brother's keeper.
If you needed to ask your co-workers to vote to keep your job instead of choosing a work bonus for themselves, what would happen?
They address this conflict, and you follow the protagonist thru the process of her carefully taking on this task of asking for her job back over the weekend - with each inspiration and each doubt she faces when knocking on each co-workers door.
It's a perfectly constructed character study that draws you in and builds its tension quietly throughout.
This transcends the trap of being a mild tv movie-of-the-week with its naturalistic tone and grace-under-pressure subtlety.
Marion Cotillard received a worthy Oscar nomination for her work here, and it's well deserved.
I can't say enough good about this film. I've just watched it again, and it still finds a magic in the mundane humanity of the day to day struggles we all face.
5 doorbell chimes out of 5.
