Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Ben F — 13 Jun 2015
Obviously misunderstood at the time, I think this prequel film is absolutely genius and greatly enhanced Twin Peaks, retroactively. That's as much as anyone could hope for from a film based on a series.
To me, the explicit nature and overbearing darkness of the film (which put off many people when it was released) is what makes the consequences of what we see in the TV series feel important, real, and far more haunting.
Watching the show, one could only care about Laura Palmer so much, having spent virtually no time with her character alive. Thus, with FWWM, suddenly Laura Palmer is a real person, who really went through this horrifying experience, and the show gains a new weight to it as a result.
