Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Vincent D — 06 Aug 2010
I really like the Twin Peaks series. No...I loved the first season, liked the second season. Solving Laura Palmer's murder was a bad move on everyone's part. makes the driving plot line fall to the wayside, with no real replacement and a bunch of less interesting character stories just milling about for a few episodes. They ended the series on a high note. Lynch came back to direct the finale and I think it was a nice tie-up for the good storyline that did eventually replace the Palmer story, as well as adding to the mysteries of both Laura's death, the nature of the Black Lodge and BOB and all these other things. The unfortunate thing is that Lynch ended it with a cliffhanger.
And then there's Fire Walk With Me. This film does nothing new or interesting to the Twin Peaks world. We meet a different FBI agent...who is boring. We only get a hint of Dale Cooper (pre-Season 1, so no resolution to our cliffhanger) and the main story of Laura Palmer is just illustrating most of what we already new. The film has some good imagery, only a few new things that we hadn't already seen in the TV series, but it is Lynch, so you know its gonna be good. Its just kinda dull most of the time, and if you hadn't seen the whole damn show FORGET IT.
