Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Tr J — 03 Jul 2016
David Lynch has no command of his own film's tone, but he obviously believes in the profundity of his vision despite its goofy self-indulgence. He's more interested in portraying the strangeness and depravity in the world with his mostly strained or awkward scenes asking the actors to play the bizarre soap opera style.
I admit I gave up on this tinny farce after about 20 minutes, as the weirdness failed to deepen and instead just stretched credibility with silly portrayals like a very bad take on Harold Pinter. I know Lynch's work well enough to predict it won't improve much.
I couldn't help wondering, what is Chris Isaak doing in this film as a lead actor? Chris Isaak, really? He's not hopeless, just terribly out of place. Oh well, even allowing for the director's offbeat humor, the gratuitous weirdness of David Lynch finds its nadir in this unwitting joke of a film.
