Review of Turtles Can Fly (2004) by Tom M — 30 Jan 2010
In Kurdish Iraq just before the war, children struggle to survive: they forage for mines to sell, deal with unimaginable personal tragedies piled one atop another, inhabit a world of danger and deprivation.
Adults appear but they're almost entirely superfluous. It's like Peanuts in Hell. Reminiscent of The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan, in that it's shot on site, non-professional actors, and tells heartbreaking stories with apparent roots in real-life experience.
Very, very moving, very memorable.
