Review of Turning Red (2022) by Mattyice — 11 Mar 2022
Pixar's recent slate over the past decade has had some notable classic hits (Inside Out, Soul, and Coco namely), some big duds (Brave, The Good Dinosaur, and Onward), but generally a lot of good movies that don't quite hold a candle to their classics of the 00s.
I felt at best it would fall into that last category. I was definitely wrong. Turning Red is a heartwarming, entertaining, and emotional movie that is truly one of Pixar's most unique, and not just due to its hilarious exaggerated and anime-inspired animation style courtesy of Domee Shi's direction.
Unlike a lot of Pixar's previous library, the story feels very free-flowing and not a basic "journey/get home" plot, and although you have a sense of the film's message about halfway through, you don't really know where the physical plot is headed by the end and makes for a wild climax.
It has its moments of awkwardness, but that's what being a teenager is all about, and I was all for the ride in this film that's another win for the studio. Now only if Disney let them release their movies in theaters again.
