Review of Turn Me On, Dammit! (2011) by Rafaella T — 03 May 2012
Dik-Alma, Dik-Alma, Dik-Alma!! <---who says I don't know any Norwegian?? What a low key chuckle this little coming of age film is with a very winsome, teenage female and male lead. With the universal theme of first crushes, school bullying, being an outcast, sticking with true friends, and having the courage to be true to yourself along with raging teenage hormones, this movie was a delightful nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Perhaps because this is a European (Norwegian) film, the mores of teen sexuality were refreshingly dealt with - that it's a normal part of life and not dirty. While Alma is obviously quite comfortable with her budding sexuality and appetite, the director portrays them with humor and quirkiness that really lends the film it's charm which will likely garner a few chuckles from the audience.
You'd never see sexuality this brazenly dealt with in American movies. This movie, along with most Nordic films that I've seen, seem to bathe their characters in such a warm northern light to create idyllic and beautiful shots which bring about a sense of intimacy between the characters and that between the characters and the audience member.
