Verhoeven takes his typically brutal hammer to sexual relations in this both immature and conversely deeply wise meditation on youth, the fetishisation of the body, despair and ultimately love.
Rutger Hauer owns of course but the true discovery here is Monique van der Ven who almost burns through the screen in her sultry role.
