Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Greg C — 08 Dec 2015
Low budget is not always a bad thing. Turbo Kid may be this years best example of that. The film gives a whole new meaning of a good time. If you like nostalgia, synth music, post apocalyptic settings, romance, and extreme blood and gore. Turbo Kid is the film you have been waiting for.
Set in the future post-apocalyptic wasteland of 1997 (the film has that 80?s vibe), we meet The Kid (Munro Chambers). Like most people in the wasteland, The Kid spends his days trying to survive, but also playing it safe. Always have a getaway vehicle and helmet, pack various weapons, and never go outside of the safe zone. For fun, The Kid loves reading Turbo Rider comics, his hero. His routine life changes when he meets Apple (Laurence Leboeuf). An overly friendly female, who can swing a mean "gnome bat". They must defeat the darkly twisted Zeus (Michael Ironside) who provides the wasteland with it's only source of water. Just don't ask how it's made.
Turbo Kid is a film I can watch over and over again. The film is filled with an amazing amount of Monty Python-esque violence and gore that helps make an awesome plot even better. The film also features incredible chemistry among it's leads. Their story is very touching and sweat during a dark period for mankind. I can understand if the film is too much for some people. But if you enjoy over-the-top, post-apocalyptic gore fest, this is the holy grail. An instant classic in my books.
It may not have the star power, budget, and wide-release as this year's other post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max: Fury Road, but you can tell the directors of the film put a lot of sweat, tears, and buckets of blood into the making. I am someone who appreciates good film making and story-telling at any level. Turbo Kid was a super-charged blast that hit me in all the right places. One of my favorites of the year that receives a perfect score for a perfect movie.
