Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Gwilym M — 03 Apr 2016
A very intelligent re-dreaming of some very old myths, based very intentionally in the 80's comic culture that some hipster 30 somethings of today will understand. The eighties was perhaps the first time the savage underbelly of industrialised consumer culture began to visibly exhaust the natural resources of the planet, and so it's an apt setting for an updated, dystopian version of the Wandering Knight myth.
Thankfully, the Hero's Journey of recent decades has had less of an influence, with instead a version of the Adam and Eve story explored in its stead. The further conflation of Eve with the iPhone is a particularly stark idea, and is skilfully handled.
Both actors and script are excellent, but the pace of the direction / editing I found to be a little stiff on occasion, the deliberate timing too much of an affectation at times; but not always, often the pace is perfectly in step, particularly in revealing the fine intimacy achieved between both leads.
