Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Adam R — 02 Jan 2017
Turbo Kid is the long lost 80s film that was never actually made in the 80s. It has all of the quirks and style of fantasy and sci-fi movies from that decade along with a large helping of blood and gore.
The movie is very charming despite its obvious low budget and has some appropriately over the top action sets as well as some terrific performances, especially by B-movie master Michael Ironside as, who else, the villain.
Unfortunately it feels that the filmmakers were so obsessed with giving this movie a distinct style that they completely neglected writing an interesting story and characters. Now while a movie like Turbo Kid doesn't have to be especially deep, it's cookie cutter character types leave a lot to be desired. On top of that, the movie's style gets to a point where it starts to work against it. Since that's its main driving force, and because its limited by its budget, the film becomes somewhat tiring.
With that said, I still enjoyed it overall. if you are fine with a purely surface level 80s nostalgia film, then you'll certainly like this too.
