Review of Turbo (2013) by Kevin R — 19 May 2014
No dream is too big and no dreamer is too small.
An ambitious snail wants nothing more than to win the Indianapolis 500. He works a tedious life and roams around looking at cars until an accident leads to him being a super fast/charged snail. The snail now has super speed but how can he accomplish his dreams? He'll need to find a fellow dreamer that is a human and can put some drive behind him to the top? A young man working at a taco truck discovers him and tries to find some friends to help the snail out.
"How can they not make fun of you? You almost make them.".
David Soren, director of two short Madagascar films (Merry Madagascar and Madly Madagascar) delivers Turbo in his directorial debut. The storyline for this picture is just okay and fairly straightforward (and also felt like a Cars knock-off). The animation is first rate and on par with Ice Age, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda. The voices are well selected and include Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg, Paul Giamatti, Luis Guzman, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Rodriguez.
"You've just been white shadowed.".
I have been trying to see this with my daughter for ages it seems like. We finally caught this on Netflix and found it fun to follow. The movie overall is an above average film and a nice addition to the genre but it is far from a classic that is a must have for your collection. I would watch this with your child once but I wouldn't purchase it.
"Tuck and roll!".
Grade: C+.
