Review of Tully (2018) by Jon O — 06 May 2018
Charlize Theron is fearless vulnerable humanity in Jason Reitman's "Tully". Charlize plays very desperate, perhaps depressed Mom Marlo, with 2 kids, the newborn baby, and barely there husband Drew, played by Ron Livingston.
Marlo discovers salvation in wise-life 26 year-old night nanny Tully, played with delightful gravitas by Mackenzie Davis. Tully tells Marlo, "I'm hear to take care of you." While talking with Tully, Marlo says, "We (women) don't heal." Voicing Writer Diablo Cody's words, "We just wear a great concealer..." Although, Rietman and Cody's narrative falters as times, and nearly derails its noble intention in the story's reveal, "Tully" is poignantly and humanely about healing oneself.
When Theron's Marlo's eyes well with tears when her troubled son Jonah says, "I love you.", her grace communicates that message of acceptance and forgiveness. The world works that way, as well.
