Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Alex K — 17 Sep 2007
Strengths:
The lead, Chweneyagae, was straight up PHENOMENAL. He was able to convey every bit of emotion right on the money and should have been up for Best Actor at the Oscars in 05. The direction is also quite good. While not incredible by any means, there are some really breathtaking images that we get to see in this film and also some very well done scenes. One of things that makes this film so compelling was it has an amazing level of human emotion, and how there is no basically good or bad person. The plot is remarkably simple, and I was amazed what they were able to do with it.
Weaknesses:
Sometimes the atmosphere feels a little B-ish but that is rare. Also, the writing could have been a lot better. They did good with it, and it certainly had its moments but this could had have been mind blowing with a more philosophical touch. Also, the plot although they did a remarkable job with it, did feel somewhat like I'd seen it before.
Overall:
You have to really nitpick to find flaws in this movie, and I really, really enjoyed this film. Like I said, remarkably simple and packed with emotion with one of the better acting jobs I've seen in some time done by young Presley Chweneyagae. Highly recommended piece of foreign film.
