Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Marcus Y — 18 Feb 2008
In the same mould as City of God, Tsotsi (meaning 'thug' in local slang) leads a small gang of kids who steal and even kill to survive in the Sweto township. Tsotsi inadvertently kidnaps a baby after he steels a car and when he is forced to look after the child we start to see some humanity return to him.
Presley who plays the lead is from Sweto and had no acting experience so with that in mind, his performance was very impressive. The editing is smart and fast and is helped by decent camera work. Its nice to see movies outside of Hollywood's stifling sphere getting the acclaim they deserve.
