Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Ken B — 07 Apr 2008
There is something about all the recent films that have come out of, or are about, Africa that is really depressing. It really is impossible to look at the continent and ignore the social and economical issues.
Tsotsi is a really beautiful film and its greatest strength is that it doesn't feel like a "we need to help Africa" movie. It doesn't ignore the issues, they are, in fact, essential to the film, but we see how they affect what people do and who they are.
My only real complaint is that, I don't feel we spent enough time with the characters to see them change in a satisfying way. The movie just felt a little stunted overall. This is a really good film and you should give it a chance.
It doesn't have much in common with films like Hotel Rwanda, its objective is completely different, but it is a satisfying film in its own right.
