Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Kurt N — 10 Apr 2008
A very human film. I can't remember when I've cried this hard watching a movie. It's story is pure and very simply told; yet profound about a young gang-member, seemingly cold-hearted but becomes attached to a baby that he finds stowed away in the back seat of a car he had stolen. Its delivered by outstanding and most believable performances by all involved. A beautiful beautiful film with some very difficult scenes to watch however, and most deservant of the Oscar it received for best foreign film.
I can't review this without also mentioning how well I enjoyed the soundtrack as well. A movie and soundtrack both to be added to my own collections soon.
An additional note concerning the DVD - there is also a short feature also directed by Gavin Hood (about 20 minutes long) called "The Shopkeeper" that you'll find in Special Features. It is equally as profound as Tsotsi. It too had a most amazing soundtrack though very different from Tsotsi's. The Storekeeper had about 5 words of dialog but said volumes.
