I get the feeling this is where Californication started. Very similar character portrayal from Duchovny who is this film's strongest male. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Julianne Moore are acting well but their characters' insipid nature and Crudup's amateurish approach really took the wind out of the sails that had been injected by an often acerbic script.

In the end it's just another American lifestyle movie. The finale in the theatre is pure guff and seemed to illustrate the fact that everyone had lost interest in finishing this movie off after an hour and 30.
