Review of Trust the Man (2005) by Riley H — 28 Sep 2010
How the hell did I rent this? I have no idea. Until I found out they're related, their ages were mystifying, the idea that two 45 year olds would be friends with a noticeably younger couple like that.
Even the sibling thing doesn't explain what the hell Gylenhal is doing in this, since she's like a decade younger than the youngest of the rest of them. Whatever. I was thinking to myself: if this was a European film, the couples' relationship will unfold slowly but it's a Hollywood film so we know they're at least friends within five minutes.
At 9 minutes, the plot is telegraphed and we know exactly what will happen. I found myself thinking I'm supposed to laugh here but not laughing. I think I laughed maybe three times and they were mere chuckles (that's right, I said mere).
Then there's this big, imposed climax with an audience and clapping. Yuck, yuck yuck. 4/10 seems really generous, but there wasn't anything obviously wrong on the technical side.
