Review of Trumbo (2007) by Marty M — 16 Jun 2016
While the story is powerful and the performances are great - it is ultimately a bit boring. I feel like they made the process of writing a film far more interesting than it really is- and even then it's still a bit dull. My wife fell asleep and I checked the running time more than once.
But I'm glad I now know the story and enjoyed the performances. Not enough credit goes to Diane Lane and Elle Fanning for their portrayals of the bullied family members. While it cops flack for being a "pro-communist" allegory and "distorting the horrors of communism" - I think the filmmakers have been very brave in presenting from the very outset; this man was a communist; we're not going to talk about his politics - we are just going to talk about what happened to him for having a different opinion to what was popular.
