Review of Truly Madly Deeply (1991) by Jasmine R — 19 Mar 2008
I like Minghella's work better when he's not trying to be David Lean and this, small scale, emotional film is so wonderful. It's not just the stand-out performances from Stevenson and (sigh) Rickman, it's Michael Maloney, Bill Paterson, the other ghosts and the sweet pest chappie from Haringey Council... By the end of the film I'm generally a complete wreck.
I've just heard about Minghella's death. If you haven't seen this movie - watch it. On reflection, many of his films concerned love and loss; perhaps he knew his time here would be short... I don't know.
This film is very special. It was just made to be screened by the Beeb (BBC) but once completed the powers-that-be realised they had something worthy of cinematic release on their hands.
Go, find it - watch it.
