Review of True Stories (1986) by Nathan C — 18 Oct 2008
I watched this with my dad, who's a casual Talking Heads fan. I like the band, too. That being said: this movie is waaaay out there. It is worth seeing if you know anything about David Byrne or the Talking Heads, or if you want to see some crazy conceptual stuff and design work (my favorite scenes include the "Love for Sale" commercial and the fashion show), or if you want to see John Goodman ("What is he doing here?!") in what turns out to be quite a fun role.
On the whole, it is a "completely cool, multi-purpose movie"---but the main thing I don't like about it is that it reminds me too much of near-plotless mockumentaries like Waiting for Guffman (bleagh!) and Chalk (not quite as bleagh, but still flat).
