Review of True Stories (1986) by Dan G — 26 Mar 2009
A truly excellent film that expertly preserves a very specific time and place in America that, while it wasn't that long ago, now seems horrendously dated. It is strange to watch something set in 1985 and think of it as a period piece.
This film has it all: excellent music, beautiful cinematography, a great performance by John Goodman, charm, wit and an uncanny knack for finding beauty in the most basic things. This movie, I get the impression, is perceived to be aging poorly and that interest in it has waned; hence the fact that it is a soundtrack-driven film that has yet to even be released in a home video format with stereo sound mastering.
It's 2 years too late for a 20th anniversary edition, but maybe somebody will see the potential for a 25th anniversary revival edition in 3 more years...
