Review of True Romance (1993) by Jay E — 18 Jul 2012
Signature to Tarantino, this film does rely heavily on dialogue. Personally, I thought the dialogue was good at times, but comparing it to some of his other works, it is probably the weakest. What makes this movie is the strong acting, and the endearing nature of the well presented love story. I may be a bit bias, because I am a sucker for "in over their heads" type scenarios, but this one definitely delivers. It provides the proper amount of conflict without delving into the realm of outrageousness, while still providing a fantastically over the top ending. That may seem like a contradiction, but I don't know, it just works.
The one thing that didn't work was the Elvis hallucination that Clarence experienced throughout the movie. It did indicate that he had a bit of madness in him, but in my opinion, not enough. If you're going to include it fine, just go some direction with it. Instead, his visions of Elvis just became a distraction and interrupted flow. Oh, and on a side-note, the music in this movie set a fantastic mood.
