Review of True Lies (1994) by Tyler F — 19 Oct 2009
Arnies last decent film in my opinion, and who else to direct this but Lord Cameron himself. Being an Arnie/Cameron collaboration, you can pretty much guess what the film will be about - Arnold works for a secret government organisation who pretty much do what MI6 and Bond do but with a bit more of a gung ho attitude. Naturally, Arnold also has wife (enter Jamie Lee Curtis) and a daughter (a very young Eliza Dushku) who have no idea what Arnie really does for a living. The bad guy, played by a very angry Art Malik is a Middle eastern terrorist with all the prejudice we used to love in films until 9/11 came along - naturally he wants something he can't have and he will nuke cities to get it. Thats pretty much all you need to know - everything else is just pure adrenaline pumped, guts and glory, done in the only way Cameron knows how, action extravaganza. You get everything from Arnie doing the tango to him flying a Harrier jet (which is awesome by the way).
Some would say that the sole attraction to this flick is a smoking Jamie Lee Curtis doing a sexy dance in nothing but a bra, panties and high heels - while this in itself would probably give me enough reason to donwload the movie, it is the plain simple fact that film works in such wonderful way that I would pay money again and again just indulge myself in the crazy world that Arnie and Cameron concocted.
Is this Arnie's best film? No.
Is this Cameron's best directing? Of course not.
Is it loads of fun and beats the sh*t out of all facsimilies out there? Oh GOD yes.
